During the research associated with my second doctoral dissertation, reading the work of Frederick Winslow Taylor allowed me to critically revisit an interpretation that, for years, had reduced his thinking to the image of an industrial foreman obsessed with time control and worker discipline. A renewed reading of The Principles of Scientific Management reveals a broader proposal: an effort to replace improvisation with systematic knowledge, to transform productive experience into method, and to assign management explicit responsibility for developing people. This realization does not eliminate the historical and epistemological limitations of Taylorism, but it does require recognition of its complexity and its influence on the emergence of management as a field of knowledge.

The work was originally published in 1911, in a context shaped by the expansion of large-scale industry, the standardization of production, and the need to coordinate organizations whose size and complexity exceeded the possibilities of craft-based forms of supervision. In that environment, Taylor challenged procedures handed down through custom or performed by rule of thumb and proposed replacing them with observation, measurement, analysis, and the deliberate design of work. His project may be interpreted as an epistemological shift: performance ceases to depend exclusively on the worker’s tacit knowledge or the supervisor’s intuition and begins to be understood as a phenomenon that can be studied, documented, compared, and improved.

From this perspective, scientific management should not be understood merely as a set of techniques for increasing productivity. It also constitutes a theory about the production and distribution of organizational knowledge. Management assumes responsibility for studying processes, formulating methods, establishing criteria, and transferring learning to those who perform the work. Although the separation between conception and execution later generated legitimate criticism because of its potential to reduce worker autonomy, the underlying principle, making relevant knowledge explicit and preventing the organization from depending on haphazard practices, remains fundamental to quality, safety, operational continuity, and institutional learning.

One of the most significant passages in the work concerns the organization’s responsibility for developing competent people. Taylor maintains that the obligation is to «cooperate systematically in the training and preparation of this competent man,» rather than merely searching for individuals previously trained by others (Taylor, 2000, p. 16). This statement contains an idea of remarkable continuing relevance: talent should not be conceived exclusively as a scarce resource acquired in the market, but as a capability that the organization itself helps to build. In contemporary terms, this position is closely aligned with competency development, knowledge management, situated learning, and job-related training practices.

The relevance of this approach is particularly evident in knowledge-intensive organizations. A company that depends exclusively on professionals who arrive fully prepared exposes itself to turnover, the loss of critical knowledge, and an inability to reproduce its capabilities. By contrast, an organization that documents processes, facilitates the transfer of experience, supports learning, and creates development pathways transforms individual knowledge into collective capability. Taylor’s contribution can be recovered here without accepting a mechanistic interpretation: systematic training should not reduce the person to an interchangeable executor, but should create the conditions for people to understand, improve, and eventually redesign the work system.

The connection with organizational learning nevertheless requires analytical caution. A conceptual affinity may be identified between Taylorist systematization and later models of knowledge creation and conversion, including Nonaka and Takeuchi’s SECI model. However, conceptual similarity does not demonstrate direct historical influence. It is defensible to argue that Taylor anticipated certain problems related to making knowledge explicit and transferring it; claiming that later authors necessarily derived their models from his work would require specific documentary evidence. This distinction is essential in doctoral analysis because it separates theoretical interpretation from causal claims about intellectual genealogies.

Another central component of Taylor’s approach is the search for convergence between the interests of management and those of workers. Taylor states that the principal objective of management is to secure «the maximum prosperity for the employer, coupled with the maximum prosperity for each employee» (Taylor, 2000, p. 19). The statement expresses an aspiration toward reciprocity: efficiency should not benefit the owner alone, but should also translate into better income, stability, and development opportunities for those who participate in production. This formulation challenges the idea that scientific management is, in its stated intention, a theory founded solely on the unilateral exploitation of labor.

Nevertheless, the harmony of interests proposed by Taylor must be examined critically. Organizational interests do not automatically coincide; they are negotiated within power structures, incentive systems, and institutional frameworks that distribute decision-making capacity unequally. Increased productivity may generate shared prosperity, but it may also intensify work, displace positions, or concentrate benefits when mechanisms for participation and fairness are absent. Taylor’s promise should therefore be understood as a condition that requires organizational design, governance, and ethical deliberation, rather than as an inevitable consequence of technical efficiency.

Taylor also indicates that one of the most important purposes of workers and managers is to develop each individual so that the person can perform the highest level of work compatible with his or her abilities (Taylor, 2000, p. 21). This proposition introduces a dimension of alignment among the person, the task, and development. Read from a contemporary perspective, it may be related to competency-based management, job design, internal mobility, and the construction of career paths. A modern interpretation, however, must avoid treating «ability» as a fixed limit imposed by the hierarchy. Capabilities develop through experience, support, education, feedback, and participation in increasingly complex challenges.

The work also reveals important omissions. The end customer, environmental sustainability, social responsibility, open innovation, and the plurality of stakeholder groups do not occupy a central place in the original framework. This omission is understandable in its historical context, but it prevents the model from being transferred literally to contemporary organizations. Internal efficiency is no longer sufficient to explain organizational viability. A company may optimize its operations while simultaneously destroying value if it ignores the customer experience, erodes trust, exhausts its employees, fails to meet social expectations, or loses its capacity to adapt to the environment.

At this point, a decisive difference emerges between a mechanistic view and a systemic perspective. Taylorism tends to decompose work, isolate variables, and seek the optimal method for a defined task. Contemporary organizational thought, by contrast, recognizes that outcomes arise from interactions among people, technologies, structures, culture, strategy, and the environment. Local improvement in one activity may produce adverse effects in other parts of the system. Measurement and standardization must therefore be integrated with criteria of coordination, learning, innovation, and overall viability. The question is no longer merely how to perform a task more quickly, but what consequences that optimization produces for the organization as a whole.

Despite these limitations, several of Taylor’s insights remain relevant. Rigorous observation of processes, clear definition of responsibilities, deliberate preparation of people, reduction of avoidable variation, and the search for evidence to support decision-making are indispensable practices. In regulated industries, critical operations, health services, advanced manufacturing, or software development, the absence of explicit processes can increase risk and make performance excessively dependent on particular individuals. The contemporary challenge is to preserve methodological discipline without allowing standardization to become rigidity or control to substitute for trust.

This reinterpretation makes it possible to distinguish between scientific management and managerial scientism. The former involves asking questions, observing, testing, learning, and revising methods on the basis of evidence. The latter emerges when it is assumed that every human phenomenon can be reduced to metrics, that a single optimal solution exists regardless of context, or that managerial knowledge is beyond question. Truly scientific management should accept uncertainty, recognize the provisional nature of its explanations, and subject its own assumptions to evaluation. In this sense, Taylor’s legacy can be renewed through a more reflexive and plural epistemology that is responsive to complexity.

For small and medium-sized enterprises, this discussion has a concrete application. Informality may provide agility during the early stages of growth, but it becomes a vulnerability when knowledge is concentrated in the founder, decisions lack traceability, and processes depend on implicit agreements. The systematization proposed by Taylor helps explain the need to document, train, and stabilize capabilities. This formalization, however, must be selective: what requires consistency and safety should be standardized, while spaces for autonomy should be preserved so that people can solve problems, innovate, and respond to unforeseen situations.

Reading Taylor therefore changes a simplified view of his contribution. His work does not provide a sufficient answer for twenty-first-century organizations, but it raises questions that remain open: How can experience be transformed into transferable knowledge? What responsibility does management have for developing people? How should the benefits of productivity be distributed? How far should standardization go without inhibiting initiative? And how can measurement be used without disregarding the human dimension of work? The persistence of these questions explains why scientific management retains value both as an intellectual antecedent and as an object of criticism.

In conclusion, Taylor’s continuing relevance does not lie in reproducing his methods literally, but in reading them historically, critically, and reconstructively. His insistence on replacing improvisation with systematic knowledge contributed to the professionalization of management, while his emphasis on training assigned management a responsibility that remains valid. At the same time, his limitations show that efficiency must be integrated with learning, autonomy, innovation, fairness, and systemic understanding. Taylor thus ceases to be a figure associated solely with worker control and becomes a necessary interlocutor for understanding the foundations and tensions of contemporary management.

Ultimately, the continuing relevance of scientific management does not lie in mechanically reproducing its principles, but in critically reinterpreting them to strengthen the capabilities, learning processes, and adaptation mechanisms that sustain organizational viability in complex and changing contexts.
